on a bit of a vinyl kick lately. My stepdad has stacks of records, and I have a few of my own. I got an outboard pre-amp so I could use my dad's record player on my receiver. it's fun!

i helped a friend and her husband move today. it was fun! i dislike moving myself, but don't mind helping other people. when it's your own stuff, it can get really overwhelming. i'm pretty good at organizing (other peoples things).
i also love tetras, which has fairly transferable skills.

I was supposed to take the bus to a job interview today, but it came 5 minutes early and went right by me. I called them and left a message to call me back and reschedule, but..no call back as of yet..

My aunt and uncle live nearby the bus stop, my grandmother too. I don't really talk to my extended family a lot, for various reasons. It's all kind of awkward to me, but, for some reason I decided to stop in. My uncle really showed an interest in my photography...and of course, he already knew about me applying to school, etc (my mom gossips like mad..) but he really showed a genuine interest. I was surprised to learn he owned a D40 & 2 lenses. He offered to loan them to me. I'm not sure why. I think it's his way of showing support & trying to help me out.

So, this was taken with my uncle's D40 on the walk back home...

We used to have a name for these other than "dandelion seeds" when we were kids, but I can't recall it now...

my dog put two long marks on my face with her claws. from my ear to my mouth. she knows not to jump on people's faces. it hurts like a bitch and will probably be a lot more red tomorrow.

we play kind of rough, but she's never jumped on my face before. i don't know what to think of that.

today was spent waiting for a phone call that never came. a good friend is in afghanistan. he called on wednesday just to say he cared "in case anything were to happen" in the next few hours.

i'm sure he'll be ok, but it's still stressful.

how do people do it? wait like this, i mean?

at just about 2 a.m. i finally got a message from him. he was safe, although couldn't talk about what he had to do.

Today was kind of a strange day

It feels like a bunch of stuff happened even though I pretty much sat here and did nothing all day...

First I got a spam email from Holland College that made my heart skip a beat. Evil.

Then I remembered Beau from napkin lifestyle wanted to use some of my photos for their site. So I sent those over, he's gonna post them next week.

Then I got a call from the 2011 Canada Games about being a volunteer photographer for the games. It was just a preliminary interview. There is an orientation in the fall and then the final decision is made, but it's still pretty exciting!!

And THEN I got a call from a prospective employer, they seemed really excited, because I had worked for another one of their locations previously. The lady on the phone knew my manager from the other location and was super enthusiastic, said she was going to forward my resume onto the tech department right away.

AND THEN MY XBOX BROKE! :( I was super bummed out at first. It friggin' worked like less than 24 hours previously. But then I checked on the warranty and it's still active :D So, free repair yay.

ANYWAY. All in all, pretty full day. Sitting here in front of my computer doing nothing... Well, I guess I played with the dog somewhere in there too. So not exactly nothing..

it's tuesday and that means trivia! i'm usually too tired to be of any use, but every now and then i can help out.

i still can't edit raw files, so i'm using my iphone. i have a (borrowed) laptop, it just needs a plug in which i haven't really had the time to sit down long enough to download! hopefully by the time it's my turn again...

i'm slowly getting back on my feet. feels like i'm crawling. i've been searching for the right word that describes what it's like to experience how one persons actions can seriously affect anothers life.
it's going to take me a long time to get back to normal. financially and emotionally.
i was robbed of expensive equipment, but i was also robbed of my personal safety.
i just don't feel safe anymore.

It was sunny, warm and beautiful tonight after work.

I listened to ...And the Ever Expanding Universe in it's entirety on the bus home, and watched the sunset the entire time. It was amazing. I was so happy. I didn't ever want to leave that moment.

Now I'm home. It's dark. It's close to midnight. I'm sitting here alone, when I could be out having fun at a show. I work tomorrow, but not until 1pm. But I live 20km outside of the city. No money for a cab and the busses stop running at midnight. Nowhere to crash because most of my friends have already left NS.

I hate this. I have these feelings too frequently. This isn't me. I know it. Need school. Need to move. I need to get out of my parents place ASAP. I'm stagnant.

so i have been trying to move and work full time, so my life has been insane. i've been taking my photos, but haven't been able to upload them.

well, now they will never be, because 2 weeks after moving in to my new apartment, we got robbed..

my laptop & camera were everything to me. i have come to terms with the materialistic loss. it's going to be about a $3000 hit, but it's all just stuff, right?
what disturbs me is the invasion and loss of everything on my laptop.
i literally feel like i have been personally violated.

i created a facebook note detailing the events & items stolen. i am going to paste it here, which is going to create an extremely long post. i'm really sorry...

I moved into my apartmen in the middle of April. 2 weeks later we got broken into.
Roommate 1 had her rent money stolen.
Roommate 2 had her laptop & webcam stolen. (she thinks it was a grey & black toshiba)
I had my laptop & camera stolen.

This theft happened on upper prince street around 1pm. They climbed in through a bedroom window that was open a crack.

My camera was brand new. I bought it around august. I don't even have it paid off. It was a canon T1i with a much older 18-55mm lens & a UV filter. This is odd because it's the kit lens from my old camera and all new cameras have the image stabalizing feature.
The strap (likely removed) has lots of awesome buttons.
My laptop is a 15 inch MacBook pro. The battery isnot an apple brand battery. The trackpad & keypad is well used. I had lots of stickers on the outside so there may be residue or scratch marks where they removed the sticker. It is also missing the front 2 feet on the bottom.

We've taken all of the required steps so far. Now it's just pray like fucking hell it shows up.

One of my long time best friends, who I hadn't really seen since October got in touch with me today...it's funny how quickly we fall back into our old routine. It's like we last talked just a day or two ago. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

He got a new dog. His name is Winston :)

He's borrowing my old rebel now, to document him growing up. We're going to the park next weekend so I can give him a crash course in how to use it.

So, I'm back from PEI. The meeting with Holland College went really well! so I applied. I'm pretty excited! They have a lot of neat equipment and facilities, and the program seems really interesting.

I got to see Martin & Kim too! And Martin's girlfriend, Krista. It was a fun time! We went to trivia on Tuesday, and watched Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog last night.

I also bugged Moe a lot while she was working. Sorry, Moe.

So that's twice in two months I've had to say goodbye to ya'll. It really doesn't get easier.

I'm sure we'll meet again in the summer

i moved today. it's a pretty sweet apartment. i'm really glad i found it.

...but this is the first night in awhile that i didn't go to bed with a purring kitty by my pillow.

when i moved to halifax i missed him, but not like this. i guess before, he was still youthful & active, but in the last 2 months he has really gone downhill. he lives in my room. he lost a LOT of weight. he doesn't play. his appetite went downhill. he doesn't even drool when i pet him...

now i know that his days are numbered, i can SEE it. i feel like i'm wasting them by leaving and my heart aches. we've been through a lot of homes together.
a lot of lives.

i can bury my head in his side. nuzzle the top of his head. pet his belly. wrap my arm around him & fall asleep.

I went for a walk with the dog today, first time outdoors since the operation, and it feels fine. No pain really at all anymore. I did take a photo of the dog but eh, I can do that any time. I won't have terminator eye forever!! :P

saturday night i hopped in the car with martin & his girlfriend. we went to sackville, new brunswick to see daniel, fred & julie. it was a pretty great show. definitely worth the trip. sackville is a cute little town. delicious coffee! charlottetown could learn a few things.
i can't find a cup of coffee that i actually enjoy here.

today i went for a walk to get milk. possibly the quietest sunday in awhile.

Eye surgery, 24 hours later

So, I had eye surgery yesterday. I had strabismus in my left eye, causing it to drift outward severely most / all of the time (basically a lazy eye). It was a big problem for me personally, especially socially. Most people were cool about it, but it still bothered me when I noticed people noticing it and having difficulty deciding where they should be looking when talking to me and stuff.

And of course, there have been a few people that weren't so nice to me about it. I've had teachers back in high school assume I was mentally challenged, people assume I have a glass eye, and people who just would ask awkward offensive questions. I just didn't want to deal with it anymore.

It should have been fixed as a child but my parents didn't really deal with it properly. If it's caught early enough, it can be corrected without surgery and you can recover your stereo vision, but by the time I was old enough to realize what was going on / make my own medical decisions it was already permanent and proper binocular vision would be impossible, so it was really just a cosmetic thing for me. It was a combination of general laziness and it not being too incredibly urgent that it took so long for me to get things going. I started inquiring about surgery In august of 2008, so it's taken 19? months to go through the entire process, but it really picked up in the last month or so (I had seen 5 ophthalmologists and spoke to the surgeon twice since mid february.)

I'm really happy so far. It's super red but I know that will go away. It is really strange looking at myself in a mirror though, and seeing both eyes look back generally straight. They over corrected inwards a tiny bit because it does have a tendency to drift back over time, which means it'll drift back to center, but it's hard to notice that. It'll be about 10 weeks before it's actually in it's "permanent" spot (the surgery itself isn't permanent, but will last for 5-10 years I'm told, so still worth it to me.)

There were two surgeons, and they were both really cool. I was awake and fully aware the whole time, which was scary at first, but I really couldn't feel a thing. We talked about music & photography, and also where to meet women downtown :P

There were a few scary bits, like one time they asked everyone to be quiet due to a critical point in the procedure, and another time they were talking amongst themselves, and they were concerned about puncturing the globe, but they trailed off when they realized I could hear them, heh. (do not google "deflated eye globe" whatever you do)

i've had this incredibly sore spot right on my spine. it doesn't always hurt, but often enough to be a concern. if you ran your finger slowly along my spine, it would make me gasp if you'd hit that one spot.
i asked my doctor about it years ago. i think he mumbled something about an x-ray, and not really knowing what was wrong, and it's probably because i need to make sure i stand up straight. or something. and advil. the word advil was in there.

now i work in a natural health store. there is a nurse who works there, too. she heard that i was having back problems and she told me to take magnesium (loosens the muscles!), then started poking at my spine.
she hit that sore spot and it was like someone was stabbing my vertebrae with a fucking needle. she held my right arm in one hand, and massaged that spot with her finger.

the pain is gone!

anyway. i went to the mall for lunch today. they make delicious wraps.

Kent Building Supplies on Allen St. in Charlottetown blows their snow over the fence during the winter. Into a public park. Clearly there is a lot of garbage that goes over the fence with it, that I can only assume they will be cleaning up in the near future.

So the weather today was ridiculously bad.

I got my rain coat out for the first time since last summer, when I wore it at virgin fest. I had it bunched up with some food in a bag back then and when I un-bunched it today it still smelled like food (like chinese food?) It smelled tasty.

Today was beautiful. I went for a walk downtown to meet friends, but ended up being too late.
So I turned around and met them at my friend josh's for a couple of drinks.
Later in the evening there was a knock at josh's door. J couldn't see who it was from where I was sitting, but was very confused when the very familiar voice wasn't coming in to say hi. Clearly he was someone we all knew.
Eventually he stepped within my line of sight.
He was my cousin Jim! Jim lives right under Josh! My cousin Amy was over visiting so I popped down for a visit. It's been awhile since I've seen either of them.
Jim & I used to be really close when we were kids. He was like my big brother, but without the sibling rivalry.
Well, usually without the rivalry. I guess there was the odd squabble..

The Motorleague played with Last Call Chernobyl / Broken Ohms / Myles Deck & The Fuzz last night at the paragon. The Motorleague's set was amazing. They have a lot of energy! For the last song, they let everyone get up on stage and sing along, it was euphoric. It made me sad that we missed them at the ECMAs.

They didn't finish their set until 3am, so this count!

Well, not quite yet, we still have the Gala (which is something like $56 so we're skipping it), and after party. But this is the last sunset for us in Sydney, and the end to a beautiful day.

What a great weekend, we've had so much fun. I tallied up that I saw 20 different bands yesterday, 11 the day before, and a bunch already today. Next will be tallying how much cover I paid to see those bands. One thing's for sure, the ECMA's are not cheap, you have to be pretty well off to pay $10-20 cover at every venue...

I'm at the ECMAs with Moe & Martin. We spent the day so far wandering around mostly. Had breakfast, beers, heard some bands that were playing at the pub we were in. It's tough to schedule what to do because there is so much going on. Looking forward to a lot of music I've never heard before later tonight.

so awhile ago i cleaned out my closet. i had a bag of unwanted clothing sitting on my floor ever since. i didn't really do a thorough job, so i've had it in my head that i'd do another sweep. no sense taking a half full bag to the thrift store...

then i started thinking. most of the clothes are obviously worn... the material is fine, just not so much for wearing.
i could cut them up and make something else! a rug seemed to be the easiest. i found a video tutorial that required no sewing (phew!) and set to work.

as you can see, it didn't really turn out... it's more of a hat.. i think i'm making the knots too tight.

in my search, i found a BUNCH of tutorials for other things. i really want to try them! maybe i can get good enough to sell them...?

also: anyone who's not canadian and watched the closing ceremonies for the olympics: I'M SORRY! that is not an accurate sampling of my country. please don't hold the poor judgment of a few against the rest of us.. i beg you.

Dog Day

Woo, saw Dog Day last night. The ended with a wicked cover of Nirvana's "Drain You" which was absolutely amazing. I've only been home for about 3 hours since Friday morning so I am exhauuuusted. Going to bed.

town meeting by moonlight

the crows used to live in victoria park. for as long as i can remember, they'd come out of the woodwork at sunset, flying towards the park.
but the residents around the park started to complain, and i can't really say i blame them. their cars, yards, sidewalks would be covered in bird crap. it's pretty gross.
so, instead of actually dealing with the problem efficiently, the city installed noise makers and simply displaced them as a whole. the crows have simply moved north.
to my neighborhood.
i can definitely sympathize with the people who live around victoria park, and i don't blame them for being frustrated or for wanting something done. the crows were affecting their quality of life.
i just feel that the attempt the city made was poorly chosen. the problem is simply being moved, not fixed.

also, it's incredibly eerie to stand under a tree that has a murder of crows flying among its branches...

I know it's late but I just got home, I went to my friend's place to watch the hockey game wednesday night after work, crashed on his couch, woke up at like 8am and got home with just enough time to do laundry & then head back to work. So tired.

Upper Prince is I believe a pretty old street of Charlottetown. All the houses are big and old, and it's close to downtown. This was just in front of the elementary school.

blogger seems to be acting weird in opera. i can't use the "edit html" tab, i have to use the "compose" tab. i really need to give google chrome a try.
yes, i know, there's firefox. it crashes constantly, though.

anyway. i dug out the close-up filters tonight. it's been awhile since i've used them with any regularity. the depth of field is insane! which can be fun, or can be annoying...
i should have have a white card to make the left side a bit brighter.

formosa tea house used to give out scented tulips. it's a nice scent, although i'm glad it's wearing off. i've had a migraine all day. every single sound, glimmer of light, scent was torture.
my uncle was shoveling outside and it sort of felt like ice picks in my brain.
naturally, this meant the phone rang off the hook and people kept ringing the doorbell.

sorry. unless you are screaming bloody murder, i'm not moving.

a few weeks ago i ordered business cards with MOO. they are partnered with flickr. i got them in the mail yesterday and I AM IMPRESSED! it makes me excited to give them to people! i think i have about 15 to 20 different cards that make up a pack of 100.

i got a trial pack of the MOO green cards before ordering these. they were 13pt, and 100% recycled.
they didn't do well with printing the photos, but the text on the back was nice and crisp. i highly recommend the MOO green if you have mostly text!

for my actual business cards i went with the MOO classic. it's thicker, 16pt. printed on sustainably sourced paper with a matte laminate. the back is slightly wishy, but when you look at the amazing quality of the front it really doesn't matter!!

I spent the first half of today walking around the city taking photos, and I think I got a quite few good ones. After photos, I went to Carla's (@girlchasingbats on twitter) and she sewed a new patch into my bag. Then her, her friend and I met Charlene (@cr8tiveCandy) at Gus' for food and we went and saw art at FRED. :D

This might not be the best one but I like that it's colorful.

I was really happy with today overall.

I tried to get a shot of me stirring the stir fry. Not a bad attempt I think. It was actually harder than I thought it would be though.

The main issue was that this is time sensitive, I can't spend the time I want to get the shot or the food would be ruined! (It turned out quite well by the way. :) )

i ran into pete murphy today. we went to the al!bi for wednesday afternoon beers. i may or may not have been incredibly buzzed by the time we left.

pete is pretty awesome and incredibly talented. he's a film maker, and everything i've seen by him has been brilliant. he just released a movie, and is already working on the next one.
